About connecting home internet in Germany

Migrants coming to Germany expect a dramatic improvement in their quality of life. Therefore, the instability and low speed of the German Internet are disappointing.

A place outside the top two dozen countries in the Speedtest Global Index connection speed ranking is an unexpected result for a country that is among the five most economically developed on the planet. 4

In 2025, Germany is in 56th place in terms of Internet speed with an average of 94.78 Mbps. At the same time, the situation is getting worse every year – back in 2023, Germany was in 51st place in the ranking with a speed of 83.20 Mbps.

The speed of access to websites for an ordinary consumer depends on the state of the telecommunications networks. The consumer has to choose between a digital subscriber line DSL, cable TV, fiber optics, mobile communications and satellite.

The reason for the slow speeds is copper cable, which to this day remains the basic material for data transmission in Germany.

Copper is a relatively cheap and accessible metal. But high-speed transmission of megabytes of information over copper wire is only possible over short distances. If the path from the modem to the connection point with the main line is long, the speed automatically drops.
